WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF MTMCA?

The purpose of MTMCA is to provide a systematic means of learning and delivering the tennis teaching methodology created by Oscar Wegner, known variously as The Wegner Method, Modern Tennis Methodology and MTM.

Coaches around the world have utilized these techniques, derived from from Oscar’s books, videos, articles, TV tips, clinics, appearances and from personal contact with him over the past 40 years.

With the implementation of MTMCA all coaches can now receive reliable data from an organized source to insure a thorough understanding and application of MTM techniques

Coaches will benefit in many ways from joining MTMCA. First and foremost, by becoming MTMCA certified you will be assured of learning from the source the correct data comprising Modern Tennis Methodology.

Although a growing amount of material is being labeled as “modern tennis” via the internet, TV, publications, professional tennis organizations and even by coaches themselves, a myriad of false data is causing confusion, complication and less-than-optimal results for players. By joining MTMCA and strictly following the instructional guidelines outlined by Oscar himself, you can be confident that you are delivering the most effective tennis teaching methodology available.

Although anyone is welcome to join MTMCA, the basic purpose of the organization is to serve tennis teaching professionals. However, some individuals may be interested in learning more about teaching tennis part-time, in an academic environment, through a park, after-school, social or volunteer program, or as a parent. HOW DO I GET MTM CERTIFIED?

EDUCATION/TESTING REQUIREMENTS FOR MTM CERTIFICATION:

Score a minimum of 80% on a sixty question multiple choice test or at least 48 correct. All correct answers to the test are found in three places, listed directly below this paragraph. Current certification requires a one-time registration fee of $50 which also covers your first year’s membership, and a testing fee of $25 for the basic competency exam. Advanced written and field testing certification for the higher levels is also available after the initial exam requirements have been fulfilled. Study materials include:

If you do not pass the exam the first time you may re-take it as many times as needed, but you can retake the test no sooner than 24 hours of your original attempt. This second test will be emailed to you at no charge. Different exams are sent out in random order so that duplications do not occur. The exams will demonstrate your understanding of the fundamentals of Modern Tennis Methodology. Once you pass the exam and upon request corrections will be sent to you to explain any misunderstandings. On failed exams sources for the correct answers will be provided and you will be required to re-submit answers to missed questions before retaking the exam.

STEPS TO BECOME MTM CERTIFIED:
Register to become a first-time member of MTMCA ($50)
Pay for the entry-level exam ($25)
Submit the application form that will be e-mailed when you register
(note: your exam cannot be e-mailed to you until your application is received)
Study the materials to prepare for the basic exam
Pass the exam

Once you pass your personal data will be entered on MTMCA.com and a printable certificate will be e-mailed to you. Upon request, a hand-signed copy of your certificate will mailed to you (postage-only fee will apply). You may also download the printable Media Pack materials for your personal use.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST?

One of the goals of MTMCA is to make both the membership and learning process affordable for all coaches. The annual membership fee is $50.00 and the entry level exam fee is $25.00. Continuing education courses and certification upgrade fees vary and are available on request.

It is said that knowledge is power, and bringing coaches from all teaching backgrounds together to learn and implement a single, unified tennis methodology is a primary goal of MTMCA.

Although other certification organizations have much to offer their members, MTMCA is the exclusive provider of MTM products and services.

Oscar is recognized as a leader in the tennis teaching profession and is often invited to participate in local, divisional and world tennis conferences, but a critical missing ingredient for members of other organizations is the opportunity to have a comprehensive preview and study of MTM.

Coaches wishing to study Oscar’s method in detail will benefit greatly from the opportunity to interact with like-minded professionals from various locations and cultures. This association is designed to promote dialogue covering a wide range of topics of interest to the tennis teaching professional regardless of his background or other affiliations. Coaches certified in other organizations are not only welcomed but encouraged to join MTMCA.

I’VE BEEN TESTED BY ANOTHER ORGANIZATION. DO I HAVE TO TAKE THE MTMCA EXAM?

Yes, because testing procedures for other organizations do not cover the basic tenets, techniques and mechanics of Modern Tennis Methodology. The purpose of the entry level MTM exam is to determine the extent to which the certification candidate knows, understands and can apply MTM principles and practices in his teaching. Successful completion of the exam also provides a minimal degree of quality control to assure that the public receives reliable instruction in Modern Tennis Methodology. Although the exam does not guarantee full competence or compliance in applying MTM it provides a basis upon which the tennis teaching professional can assess his current knowledge of the method and can identify areas of improvement to better serve his clientele.

HOW DO I PREPARE FOR THE EXAM?

While the best possible scenario would be personal instruction by a certified MTM coach or Oscar himself, it is possible to prepare for the exam by thorough study of his book and DVDs. Please refer to the MTM-U area of this website for details on how to obtain the necessary study materials to prepare for the basic exam.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO STUDY FOR THE EXAM?

The amount of study time necessary to pass the exam will depend on the degree of familiarity each certification candidate has with Modern Tennis Methodology. For those coaches who are already familiar with MTM and who have applied the techniques in their own game and with students, a simple review of the study materials will suffice.

For tennis teaching professionals and prospective coaches not acquainted with MTM reading Play Better Tennis In 2 Hours in its entirety and viewing The Classic DVD series in consecutive order will provide sufficient preparation for not only passing the exam but developing skill in utilizing MTM tools.

On-court practice as prescribed in the book and demonstrated in the DVDs will further reinforce comprehension of the method. Viewing additional MTM DVD volumes and taking MTM-certified clinic(s) or private lesson(s) will complete the cycle and ensure maximum preparation for taking the exam, improving one’s own game and applying the method in one’s teaching practices.

DO I NEED TO PURCHASE STUDY MATERIALS?

You could theoretically pass the exam by discussing and practicing the method with a qualified MTM teacher, reading Oscar’s articles and 1992 book free online and by watching video clips of Oscar on the internet. However, it is highly recommended that you obtain the materials which are described fully at www.tennisteacher.com

WHAT IF I DON’T PASS THE EXAM?

The exam is given in an open-book test format, and there is no limit to the number of times a candidate may retake the exam until he passes. Different versions of the exam are available in the event a candidate does not pass on the first try, and incorrect answers will be explained in order to understand the appropriate response for any missed questions. The purpose of the exam is to ensure full comprehension of the basic principles of MTM, not to trick the applicant, so the questions are straightforward and direct. If a candidate does not achieve a score of at least 80% he may continue to retake it until he does reach that goal.

HOW CAN I GET MORE TRAINING ONCE I PASS THE EXAM?

Yes. You may submit video clips, photos, biographical information and testimonials for your personal profile page. Additionally you may submit articles for publication in the MTM-U Library (subject to approval of Oscar Wegner). Simply click on either the USA or International tab under Find A Coach on the Welcome page, then select your country or state to find a complete alphabetical list of names in that area. To access a coach’s profile page, click on his/her last name.
